100,000 Preparers Did Not Comply with PTIN Rules

The IRS announced on Jul 12 that it has identified approximately 100,000 taxation lapse preparers who did not approve with a new manners for preparer taxation marker numbers (PTINs), and it is promulgation them letters informing them of a problem (IR-2011-74).

All taxation lapse preparers (including CPAs, attorneys, and enrolled agents) were compulsory to request for and obtain a PTIN—even if they already had one—before scheming any sovereign taxation earnings for remuneration in 2011. Approximately 712,000 preparers have performed new PTINs underneath a registration program, that launched final September.

The IRS pronounced that it is promulgation letters to preparers who used old-fashioned PTINs or their Social Security numbers as identifying numbers on earnings they prepared this past taxation season. The letters explain a PTIN registration requirement and tell a preparers how to register for a new PTIN or replenish an aged PTIN.

The IRS also announced that it is operative to detect what it calls “ghost preparers”—that is, preparers who try to equivocate a new lapse preparer registration module by not signing earnings they prepare. When a IRS identifies taxpayers who seem to have had assistance with their earnings though whose earnings miss taxation lapse preparer signatures, it will send them a minute informing them how to record a censure opposite preparers who destroy to pointer earnings and explaining how to select legitimate taxation preparers.

The IRS is also operative to brand taxation lapse preparers who make steady errors.
