The new 70-mile-per-hour speed limit on the Ohio Turnpike, which the state’s trucking industry opposes, has taken effect, the Associated Press reported.

The state’s turnpike commission voted 4-1 in December to increase the speed limit in part to encourage large trucks to use the road.

But the Ohio Trucking Association wrote a letter to the commission opposing the move. It cited safety concerns from the higher limit and environmental concerns from increased fuel consumption.

Larry Davis, president of the association, said at the time that the state ought to lower the tolls to encourage trucks to use the turnpike.

The 70 mph speed limit took effect Friday.
