Retail sales climbed 0.5% in July, the largest gain in four months, the Commerce Department said Friday.

The increase followed a revised 0.3% gain in June that was larger than originally reported.

The July increase matched economists’ forecasts, Bloomberg reported.

Automobile sales rose 0.4% and nine of 13 major retail categories showed increases, Commerce said.

Almost all trucking operations depend on the health of retail sales because such sales involve nearly every type of cargo.
